AIMS


The aims of the Art & Design department are to deliver the requirements of the NI Curriculum and contribute to the aims of the school in a way that is both meaningful and effective.

We strive to:

  • develop the full potential of the individual in terms of creativity, imagination, sensitivity and spirituality;
  • enable the pupils to express themselves effectively and confidently using a wide range of skills and media;
  • foster understanding of the place of Art, Design & Moving Image within society and appreciation of the work of practitioners past and present from their own and other cultures;
  • provide an experience which will last for life and lead to a desire for further study and development in this subject;
  • recognise the achievements of the pupils through displays, exhibitions and competitions both inside and outside school.

Essentially, to borrow from David Davies, we strive to,‘..value the aesthetic/ intellectual and the vocational equally whilst encouraging pupils to revel in the sheer pleasure to be gained from the practical making of art.’And through studying Art, Design and Moving Image,‘..to encourage pupils in a pursuit of individual discovery, broadening their experience of the world through experiencing the process’ and ‘reaching outcomes which are satisfying and which advance their understanding and knowledge of life’

Art & Design is taught to all pupils at Key Stage 3.

GCSE Art and Design


The Art & Design course at GCSE (CCEA) consists of:

Unit 1: Core Portfolio (60%)
Unit 2: Working to a stimulus (40%)

In Terms 1 & 2 of Year 11 pupils experiment working in more than one of the following disciplines:

  • Fine Art (Drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, printmaking, lens-based media);
  • Graphic Communication (Illustration, advertising, packaging, computer graphics, multimedia);
  • Textile Design (Fashion and costume, printed and dyed fabric and materials, constructed textiles);
  • 3D Design (Ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, design for theatre, television and film, interior design, product design, architectural design);
  • Photography (Lens and light-based media, video and film).

They then choose one area to specialise in for their final outcome.

The Schedule of Work is as follows:

Year 11:           
Unit 1: Core Portfolio:

Year 12:           
Term 1: Completion of Core Portfolio (Final Outcome)
Term 2: Unit 2: Working to a Stimulus (Externally set examination project)    
Term 3: Presentation of work for final display.

GCSE Moving Image Arts


The Moving Image Arts course at GCSE has recently been revised to significantly reduce the workload and now consists of :

Component 1: Critical Understanding of Creative and Technical Moving Image Production (40%)
Component 2: Acquisition of Skills in Moving Image Production (20%)
Component 3: Planning and Making a Moving Image Product (40%)

Pupils undertake study and development of skills in the following areas:

  • film language (camera, editing, lighting, sound, animation);
  • genre and representation;
  • creative production techniques;
  • production management; and
  • industry contexts.

The Schedule of Work is as follows:

Year 11:
Component 1: Teaching
Component 2: Controlled Assessment Tasks
Task 1: Storyboarding;·
Task 2: Camera Work and Editing (combined skills areas);·
Task 3: Postproduction Sound; and·
Task 4: Stop-Motion Animation.

Year 12:
Component 3:  Planning and Making a Moving Image Product·
Students create an individual film or animation  of approximately 2 minutes in length
Component 1: Online Examination

An exciting aspect of the department is the development of Moving Image Arts, currently taught at AS and A2 level. Students have the opportunity to study the craft of filmmaking and produce a short film of their own.

AS Level:

The Moving Image Arts course at GCE (CCEA) consists of:

AS-Level: Year 13:
AS1: Creative Production: Foundation Portfolio (70%)
AS2: Critical Response (30%)

A2-Level: Year 14:
A2/1: Creative Production & Research: Advanced PORTFOLIO (AL 35%)
A2/2: Critical Response & Specialisation (AL 15%)

Homework

Years 8-10


Homework supplements project work done in class and can take the form of:

  • Research
  • Completing classwork
  • Related activity
  • Bringing in objects, materials, etc

The work is marked as part of the whole project at its completion.

Years 11-12 


At GCSE each pupil is expected to work on their Core Portfolio both at home and in school.Therefore, homework can include a range of activities and formats. Work at home must be continuation of work carried out in class; no piece of work should be completed in its entirety at home.A schedule of work is issued at the beginning of term.

Years 13-14


Art and Design
At Advanced Level each pupil is expected to work on their Coursework Portfolio / Personal Investigation both at home and in school.Homework can include a range of activities and formats - research, photography, media experiments, etc.Work at home must be a continuation of work carried out in class; no piece of work should be completed in its entirety at home. A schedule of work is issued at the beginning of term.

Moving Image Arts
At Advanced Level each pupil is expected to work on their Foundation / Advanced Portfolio both at home and in school.Homework can include a range of activities and formats - research, filming, essay writing, media experiments, etc.All practical work at home must be a continuation of work carried out in class; no piece of practical work should be completed in its entirety at home.A schedule of work is issued at the beginning of term.
