  • Girls Hockey – 1st XI reach Schools’ Cup Final

Congratulations to the 1st XI Girls hockey team who will play in the School’s Cup Final on Wednesday 4 March 2015. The support at the semi-final was huge; few of our players had experienced such big crowds at a hockey match before so this was a new experience for most of us. Crowds from both Sullivan and Friends’ lined the outside of the pitch while we were warming up, and began chanting loudly. As the game began we held possession well and had a few chances in the Friends’ circle for an early lead. Friends’ soon warmed up to the game however, and with some strong play built up in midfield they were putting dangerous pressure on us defensively. A short corner from Friends’ gave them a good chance at taking the lead but a great save by our goal keeper Jenny Beattie kept us equal. Another penalty corner came minutes later however and this time we weren’t so lucky- Friends’ took the lead in the fouteenth minute after a great strike. This lead was held for only seconds however, as Zara Malseed took our passback and ran straight for the Friends’ goal, beating numerous players and finishing her run with strong strike, scoring an incredible individual goal. This dramatic equaliser was followed by end-to-end play from both teams, both trying desperately to take the lead. A fast paced counter attack from Friends’ resulted in a two-versus-one against our goal keeper and led to a well-worked goal from Friends’, giving them a 2-1 lead late in the second half. This put us behind for the second time in this half and our morale began to drop. At half time, words from our coaches reminded us that we had the potential and opportunity to turn this match around, and we went into the second half with our heads high. In the first ten minutes of the second half, we had most attacking play, and continuous pressure on the Friends’ defence eve Friends’ responded with dangerous attacking play and with pressure on our defence this led to a nail-biting finish. The final whistle marked the end of a tense match, leaving us the overjoyed winners. We now progress into the final of the Belfast Telegraph Schools Cup against Banbridge, again at Lisnagarvey on 4 March. Caitlin Young

  • Girls Hockey – 1st XI in quarter-final of Schools Cup

The 1st XI girls celebrate their 5-0 victory over Dalriada in the quarter-final of the Schools Cup. On the day of the match we had lots of support which added pressure for some, and pushed others on- encouraging them to play well. The game started out fairly evenly, with impressive play from both sides. However,We went 1-0 early on from a well-executed short corner, with the goal coming from our captain Zara Malseed.  Two more goals followed from Zara later on in the first half, giving us a comfortable 3-0 lead going into half time. From what we had heard about from other teams about Dalriada, we knew they were a strong team who would fight until the very end, so we knew we couldn’t let standards slip in the second half, despite our 3 goal lead. We started the second half with the same fast pace and intensity we had played with in the first, dominating the play early and holding on to possession. Two goals from Katharine Hill shortly followed; a great strike from a short corner and later a goal from open play. Dalriada were a good opposition and kept testing us until the final whistle, with a number of good runs that were well handled by our defence. As the final whistle blew it settled in that we had just won the quarter final of the schools cup, a very convincing 5-0 victory. Everyone was ecstatic that the work we had all put in up to this point had paid off. We have now earned a place in the semi-final against Friends School Lisburn, for the first time for all of us in this competition, and we plan to fight hard to earn our place in the final. • Girls Hockey – 3rd Round Schools Cup

The 1st XI squad after their impressive 5-1 win over one of the Schools’ Cup favourites, Armagh Royal. The girls played Armagh in the 3rd Round at Civil Service the Saturday before Christmas. They stamped their authority on the game right from the first whistle and were 1-0 up in the first 45 secs with a great individual goal from Zara Malseed. They had doubled their lead within 3 mins following an impressive break which was neatly finished by Laura McCaw. The girls went 3-0 up just before half time with a well worked penalty corner, buried in the net by Katharine Hill. The girls continued to look dangerous on the break and although Armagh did enjoy a considerable amount of possession they never threatened the goal directly. Zara Malseed added two more well taken goals after some great build up play to really seal the victory. Armagh continued to battle and were awarded a consolation goal right on the final whistle, scoring from a penalty corner. Congratulations to all the squad, they now face Dalriada in the quarter finals on Sat 31 January 2015.  The team are sponsored by the Belfast Telegraph and we thank them for their support.
